our history

2023

The 2nd year of our annual Beyers Greenstone run was held. Entries were sold out and it was a huge success. We celebrated our Comrades Runners at the Aches and Pain Party held at Grand slam in June Our Annual Fundraiser was held at The Barnyard Two Local Charities were well supported by our runners and Kees Beyers: Edenvale SPCA and Brainy Birds It was a Joint effort with Rand Road Warriors, Bedfordview Athletics club and Jeppe Athletics Club, as we all supported Cupcakes for Cansa in September at Stoneridge Centre.

2022

Our first Beyers Greenstone Run was held at Stoneridge.

2018

GHRC supported the Edenvale SAPS Victim Empowerment Project in the fight against woman and child abuse charity. GHRC members collected Teddy bears and stationery for the children and filled handbags with toiletries for the woman. Greenstone held their 1 st long Club run to Hartbeespoort Dam. It would mimic the perfect route profile for the Comrades Down Run. Literally meter for meter of elevation gain and drop it was virtually Identical to the Comrades profile. Almost 60 members ran Comrades Our aches and Pains party was held at Fireman’s tavern celebrating all our Comrades Runners

2017

Memberships grow to 200 members GHRC Charity: Food and Clothing were donated to the homeless in Edenvale, along with Compass home Our Fundraiser was a Hippie Themed Fundraiser held in September. GHRC supported Cupcakes for Cansa at Stoneridge Centre

2016

We grew even stronger and ended the year with 130+ members. We had 22 Comrades entries but unfortunately had 4 non-finishers. The club also opened up a Social membership for those training with us but belonging to other clubs. We supported Various Charities 1. Collected clothes and food for the Homeless in Edenvale. 2. Collected at Gilloolys park run for Helen in the community (animal charity) and Door of hope for children. 3. Held a Christmas Party for Grace community center in Hillbrow. Our annual fundraiser was an awesome Hero’s and Villains party. We had our first Gala Evening to recognize the achievements of the runners in the club.

2015

Our membership grew to 100. We had an awesome club fundraiser (80’s Party) and the club purchased a trailer with the profits. We teamed up with RRW for comrades to help with tables on the route. We had 20 entries at Comrades with 2 non-finishers. We had a great Charity drive at the Modderfontein Park run collecting for the Edenvale Child Welfare and Compass Group. This Was a huge success.!!!

2014

The club grew to 84 registered members and we secured a sponsorship from Green Valley Shopping Centre. As a club, we attended 5 larger races including comrades. We had our Annual Fundraiser at the Barn Yard. Mo’s and Hoe’s got bigger and better, raising funds for the SPCA. We had our first club member running the London Marathon. Again, we had 5 Comrades entries.

2013

We had a huge increase in people joining our runs and that’s when Greenstone Hill Running Club was officially registered with CGA. Our motto at the time and still today is “drinkers with a running problem”. New vests were designed, and we had 5 members running comrades and launched our annual Charity run, then called ‘Mo’s and Hoe’s”.

2012

Saw the group move to outside Virgin Active at Stoneridge mall to accommodate parking and the group grew to around 13 people. In that year, Marty, Scharlie, Larne, Wazza, Astrid, Candice and Raff the backbone of the club joined. They were training for a half Ironman. These were the co-founders of the club including Nic, Maria, and Matt. We didn’t have enough members to start a registered CGA club so one of our runners ran comrades that year under Vaal.

2011

In Mid-2011 a group of mates who were training for Iron Man and other Triathlons, started a time trail leaving Bushwillow main entrance in Greenstone. Soon after a special lady, Maria and her friend Taryn joined these runs too. Maria has been an honorary member of the club ever since.
